What To Look For

Personality

Your child will spend time with their private teacher for years so make sure you find a teacher you like! Someone who is encouraging and funny will go a long way with kids. A music teacher may become a role model and someone who is there during their teenage years as a confidant so make sure your child likes the teacher.

Experience

You are entrusting your child’s musical future with the teacher you choose so ask about their background. Good questions to ask are: How many students do you have? What is your primary instrument? What education have you received? What ages and levels do you teach? A teacher with videos on social media is a great reference.

Convenience

Are you willing to drive to a music school or would you prefer a teacher that travels to you? Traveling teachers are very convenient but they are rare to find and usually have a waiting list. Be prepared for a limited schedule since a traveling teacher will factor in driving time, traffic and parking. Expect to pay a premium for this service.
